A Kruger day trip from Graskop
Kruger's closest gate to Graskop is Phabeni, 51 km away on the R535 through Hazyview, which is about fifty minutes from our front door. That is what makes a day in the park practical from here: you can be at the gate when it opens and back for dinner in the village.
It also means you do not have to choose between the escarpment and the Lowveld. Most guests drive the Panorama Route one day and go through the gate the next.

Slightly further and usually quieter at the gate itself. It reaches Pretoriuskop, the oldest camp in the park.
Orpen Gate
115 km, 2 hours 15 minutesvia the R533 and the R40 north through Klaserie
Too far for a comfortable day trip from Graskop. Worth it only if you are driving on to stay inside the park.
What the day actually looks like
Leave Graskop in the dark. Game moves in the cool of the early morning and the first two hours after the gate opens are the best of the day, so an hour of driving before sunrise buys you the part worth having.
Through Phabeni, the road runs towards Skukuza, the largest camp in the park, where there is a shop, a restaurant and fuel. Most day visitors from this side drive the loops between Phabeni, Skukuza and Pretoriuskop, which is good country for lion, elephant and buffalo, and turn back mid-afternoon.
Watch the gate closing time rather than sunset. Kruger fines visitors who are still inside after closing, and the times change with the season.
Day visitors pay a conservation fee at the gate, and the rate differs for South African residents, SADC passport holders and international visitors. SANParks sets it annually, so check the current figure on sanparks.org before you go, or ask at reception and we will look it up with you.
